MAN, W.VA. — After years of stream improvements and restoration work, Buffalo Creek has become one of southern West Virginia’s unique trout fishing waters. And things are about to get even better.
As part of Gov. Jim Justice’s Spring Trout Stocking Initiative, the stocking rate for Buffalo Creek has been increased by 10 percent. More than 2,800 trout will be released into the Logan County stream in the coming months, in addition to the initial 2,800 fish stocked earlier this year.
“We’re really making a big effort to improve fishing all over West Virginia and Buffalo Creek is just one of our many success stories,” said WVDNR Director Stephen McDaniel. “We think that this stream is ready for even more trout and it’s going to be great for the people of Man and southern West Virginia and really help with tourism.”
The WVDNR is able to increase the number of stocked trout in Buffalo Creek due to ideal angler access, water quality and in-stream habitat improvements. Buffalo Creek is also expected to receive a stocking of 2,500 fingerling rainbow trout this spring.
“It is amazing the good stuff that is happening with our great DNR and the good stuff that we’re doing from the standpoint of our fisheries and all the wonderful stuff we’re doing in regard to nature in this unbelievable state,” said Gov. Justice.
Buffalo Creek is stocked once each month, from February to May. Trout are stocked from Man upstream to Caneco, at various bridges and other access sites. To fish for trout in Buffalo Creek or any other water in West Virginia, anglers must first purchase a fishing license and trout stamp. They are available online at wvfish.com.
