WASHINGTON, FEBRUARY 30, 2022 — President Bernie Sanders today declared a national emergency over gun violence, a move that will allow the president to issue executive orders invoking massive gun control measures. “Each year, over 30,000 people are killed by guns in this nation, including innocent school children who are being massacred in their classrooms,” Sanders said. “Since Congress won’t move to stem this violence, I have no choice but to use my executive powers under the national emergency act to get something done.” The move comes in the wake of the latest mass school shooting in which 78 children were killed at a school in Georgia, the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. The shooter was a student who had acquired an arsenal of weapons using a fake ID and by hacking into the nation’s broken background check system. Sanders ran for president in 2020 pledging, among other things, to take action on national gun control. Although he was considered a long-shot fringe candidate, Sanders defeated Republican president Donald Trump in a dramatic 2020 upset. Most observers attribute Sanders’ win to revelations just before the election that Trump had secretly borrowed millions of dollars from Russian banks and was being blackmailed by Russian president Vladimir Putin. Sanders said his first executive order about gun violence will require the registration of all guns in the nation into a national database. “Anyone who has a gun that is unregistered will be arrested,” Sanders said.In addition, all military-style assault weapons will have to be turned over to the owner’s local law enforcement agency, pending a certification process for the owner to get his gun back. “Only select individuals will be allowed to own assault guns,” Sanders said. “We will deal with assault guns the same way we have dealt with the private ownership of fully-automatic guns
