David Hogg
SHIRLEY -- David Hogg, a student who survived the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting and went on to become an author and activist, will appear at the Bull Run Restaurant as part of the Bull Run Speaker Series on Sunday, Jan. 20, at noon.
Hogg survived the largest school shooting in American history on Feb. 14, 2018, at Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, Florida. A gunman opened fire inside the school, killing 17 students and staff members and injuring 17 others. The shooting sparked a national debate about gun rights and gun-violence prevention.
Having lost friends, classmates and teachers, Hogg said he decided to take action so no other young person would have to experience what he went through on that day.
Hogg co-founded March For Our Lives, a youth-led gun-violence-prevention movement, in March. He is a prolific voice on social media with more than a million followers, using his platform to raise the voices of others through shared loss to end gun violence. The son of a former FBI agent and a schoolteacher, Hogg states that he is a supporter of the Second Amendment and NRA members' right to own guns with commonsense gun and mental-health controls in place.
In 2018, Hogg and the March For Our Lives student leaders were awarded the International Children's Peace Prize by Desmond Tutu.
Inspired by educator Betsy Sawyer, a Shirley resident who taught fifth grade, students from the after-school Peace Club at Groton-Dunstable Middle School worked for 12 years to build the biggest book in the world on the topic of peace.
