Republican gubernatorial candidate Tim Herbst already has the backing of the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, a grassroots gun owners group.

Now the former first selectman of Trumbull also has a top grade from the NRA[1]. The group’s political arm has bestowed an AQ rating on Herbst, its highest mark for a non-incumbent.

In a letter sent to Herbst Wednesday, NRA state director John Webber says the group’s members “will interpret your 'AQ' rating as being a solid pro-gun/pro-hunting candidate who is an advocate for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms."

Herbst said he was honored to have the NRA’s stamp of approval.

“I will hold the line against extreme left-wing attempts to undermine the Second Amendment that do nothing to improve public safety," Herbst said. "That includes vetoing legislation that includes mandatory finger-print activated trigger locks, mandatory liability policies for long guns or mandatory registration of long guns."
