We have recently witnessed a stunning historical event with Utah’s youth joining a nationwide campaign to end gun violence[1]. Clearly the adult community has failed to provide gun regulations that produce a safe environment. Republican legislators have bought into the outrageous NRA interpretation of the Second Amendment that claims virtually every gun right is sacrosanct despite a national death toll of 39,000 annually. The Second Amendment was never meant to generate an epidemic of gun violence.

A huge change in gun policy is long overdue and the NRA has nothing to contribute. Neither do all of Utah’s current federal legislators, obsessed with their NRA rating.

If the rallying cry of our young activists were silenced by NRA power and money, it would be a devastating blow to our democracy already poisoned by toxic special interest money. The kids have confronted the NRA head on, and now it’s their parents’ turn. And that should also include every respectable citizen.

Utah needs an entirely new federal delegation, as the current one can’t seem to separate itself from the NRA, the strident enemy of everyone who wants a safe place to live.
