Indiana Conservation Officers investigating the water rescue that occurred near the Michigan City Lighthouse last evening have identified the two male subjects that fell into the water as John Hammons, 22, of LaPorte and Slater Harkleroad, 20, of Union Mills. Hammons was treated and released from the scene. Harkleroad was pronounced deceased last evening at the Michigan City Hospital.

Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an incident that occurred near the Michigan City Lighthouse Breakwall around 7:30pm. Two young male adults were walking on the breakwall when they both fell into the water after being knocked over by the crashing waves approximately 10 -15 feet high.

One subject was able to swim back to the breakwall and tried to throw a life ring out to rescue his friend. The other male did not resurface. He was rescued by the US Coast Guard and was taken to Franciscan Health Hospital in Michigan City where he was later pronounced deceased.

Assisting Agencies: Michigan City Police, Michigan City Fire Department, LaPorte County EMS, and United States Coast Guard.
