The National Rifle Association released a letter Monday sent to its executive director by then-Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.) in 2008, where she wrote of her desire to work with the guns rights organization for "many years." "I appreciate the work that the NRA does to protect gun owners right and I look forward to working with you for many years in Congress," she wrote.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam will recall lawmakers to the state Capitol in coming weeks to take up a package of gun-control legislation he said is urgently needed to prevent killings like Friday’s mass shooting in Virginia Beach. Northam , a Democrat, told The Associated Press ahead of his Tuesday announcement that he plans to convene a special legislative session later this summer.
